As with all things Scorpio, this New Moon is naturally intense. In the chart of this particular Scorpio Moon, however, there are a significant number of astrological indications that point to it as the most important New Moon of the year.
The New Moon in Scorpio is out of this world. Potent to begin with, this passionate and instinctual New Moon is tightly trine the Uranus/Juno conjunction in Pisces, aspects which speak of opening up a radical awakening of a new way of being in partnership and commitment that may become enduring across time. Any New Moon is a time to begin things. Here, it impacts the Uranus/Juno conjunction in spiritually oriented Pisces, representing the sudden and unexpected in relationships. We may be drawn to a new or very unusual partnership, seek excursions into other, more spiritual, dimensions or look for a re-definition of our roles within an already committed relationship in ways that allow more personal freedom and individuality.
The reference to partnership is also noteworthy due to the very recent (10/29) entry of Saturn into Libra, the sign most associated with partnerships, and the sign of its exaltation. It marks the start of a two and a half year period in which it is possible to create a partnership, either intimate or business oriented, that is built to stand the test of time. On the other hand, Saturn will eliminate any partnership with feet of clay.
It is also significant that this is the first New Moon in 27 years, almost to the day, during which Saturn is in Libra. The chart for that New Moon (11/15/1982) showed a tighter than one degree conjunction between Saturn and Pluto. Worth mentioning about this is the fact that during the month of November, 1982, the old Soviet Union began its invasion of Afghanistan. Now, as this column goes to press, and while Saturn is making a “partile” (exact by degree) Square to Pluto, it is the President of the United States who is contemplating sending thousands more troops to that same country. The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Ready for another new wrinkle? In my previous New Moon commentaries I’ve thrown into the pot a new ‘location,’ (the Southland) and a different house system (Whole Signs) than those in common usage. Now I’ll raise you the Parallax Moon. Please click HERE for a summary of explanations for these choices, or not, and then we’ll get back to discussing this Libra New Moon chart, which looks like this:

Libra is symbolized by the scales of balance, representing fairness and justice. It is perhaps no coincidence that the United States’ Supreme Court begins each new session on the first Monday of October with the Sun is in Libra. Mercury is also in Libra at this New Moon reinforcing the opportunity to think through our relationship issues, attitudes, decisions, and judgments. And while Libra energy has a strong need to connect with others, we need to be comfortable in our relationship with ourselves. When life is out of balance, adjustments are necessary in order to balance the scales, and this New Moon will give us a chance to assess how best to accommodate those adjustments with the focus on our relationship with ourselves and our intimate relationships with others, as well as all jointly-held financial arrangements.
The almost exact trine (120°) between the Sun/Moon combination and Neptune is perhaps the most dynamic aspect, aside from the New Moon conjunction itself, in this chart. This combination suggests an over all picture of creative energies which find difficulty in being carried to fruition. Nevertheless, this combination is often indicative of a keen psychic awareness that can find a creative outlet in ideal or artistic pursuits.

We came under some taxing aspects as this week drew closer to Friday’s New Moon. The Saturn/Uranus opposition at 24 Virgo/Pisces was exact early Tuesday morning, the 15th, Venus opposed Neptune on the afternoon of the 17th at 24 Leo/Aquarius and then retrograde Mercury squared Pluto from Libra/Capricorn early on Thursday morning, all before this New Moon. Perhaps we might best view these stressful transits as having served to furrow the field into which we may now scatter the seed energy of this New Moon, the chart for which looks like this:
This New Moon is in late Virgo, the sign that is all about the necessary things we have to do to maintain daily life in a body, like seeing to our physical health, eating right, getting enough rest and exercise, and paying attention to the details of our daily routine and work. Virgo is also a highly intellectual sign, as it is governed by Mercury, the planet most associated with our thinking. In this respect it is also about our powers of perception and discrimination. It is meticulous, discriminating, down to earth, practical and very hard working, but can also be hyper-critical, petty and nit-picky. As it is an Earth sign it is slow to change and can throw a wet blanket on other people’s enthusiasm. Normally, under Virgo’s influence we are able to sort through the complex factors that tend to confuse us so that we may achieve clarity of purpose. However, this can not be considered a “normal” New Moon.

Busy, busy chart for the New Moon chart this month. In a very brief word, it will help us accept and love ourselves for who we are and enable us to take those steps necessary to develop inner peace and transformation.

Before we examine some of the details at play in this moment, let’s review the purpose of looking at a New Moon chart in the first place. From my perspective, the purpose is to gain an intellectual understanding of what the movement of the planets represents, within myself, so that I may hold an understanding of the template of what I wish to create during of the Lunar cycle in question.
We look at any chart, New Moon or no, to see the story of the planetary interactions in that moment, including the ease or difficulty that those planetary energies have between and among themselves. Astrologically, we see those energetic lines by way of the Aspects. Once we understand what those energies are, metaphorically, we can understand where they play out in our own lives, i.e., As Above, So Below.

The eclipse season is over and as the weather is getting cooler I am aware that summer is coming to an end. The astrological weather for the next few months also looks like it might be settling down as it includes retrograde Mercury for most of September, Pluto turning direct on 9/11 and Saturn’s ingress into Libra right before Halloween. (Virgos shouldn’t get out the party hats yet as Saturn returns for one more pass over the late Virgo degrees in April 2010.)
NEW DIRECTORS ON BOARD
There are also some changes in the air at the San Diego Chapter. I am happy to welcome two new additions to the Board. Jill Estensen has been appointed as the new Publicity Director and Deborah Ifill is our new Recording Secretary. In addition to welcoming Jill and Deborah I’d like to give a big thank you to VP Janet Carrol and Membership Director Tamira McGillivray for filling these positions in addition to their regular roles for the past year.
CALLING ALL ASTROLOGERS
The Study Groups resulted in one member, Janet Sutton, passing Level 1. Congratulations to you Janet, well done!
In light of the changes at NCGR at the national level where it has been decided that education will be under the auspices of the newly formed NCGR-PAA, the Board has decided not to continue the Study Groups. Instead we are sponsoring a free astrological discussion group for astrologers of all levels. The Aquarius Café is open to everyone and will meet on the 3rd Saturday of the month at the Encinitas Library from 12:30-2:30 PM in one of the Study rooms. This months’ topic is Mercury, we will kick off the discussion by listening to a lecture on CD by astrologer Charles Harvey. Bring your chart and any related materials to share or just bring yourself! Coffee and tea are available at the cart outside the library. I’m looking forward to seeing you there.

The July New Moon over the Southland
by Johnny Mirehiel
As I’m sure you know, New Moon charts are often used to preview coming events for that lunar month. Since any chart must be cast for a specific location, I have chosen to triangulate a position between San Diego, Los Angeles and my home in the high desert hamlet of Morongo Valley and call it a chart for California’s Southland. A bit unusual, I know, but not more so than using the “Whole Signs” houses to set up the chart. While this approach may be heretical to some, I have adopted it as my house system of choice - because it works for me, in my chart and for the charts of clients and family as well.
Here is that chart of the current New Moon over the Southland.

There are many things going on in this particular New Moon Chart which casts its shadow over this coming lunar month. For this brief article, lets take a quick look at only three of them: the New Moon and its placement, the Venus/Saturn Square and that ongoing Chiron/Jupiter/Neptune triple conjunction in Aquarius.
To begin with, we have a 29° New Moon, in itself a rare occurrence. As it is with all 29° placements, it is considered to be at a critical degree as it is one leg of the bridge between two signs. And like all other 29° placements, this one also indicates the end of an old cycle. Now add in the dynamic of a Total Solar Eclipse at the same moment (which some astrologers consider to be 10 times more powerful than a normal New Moon), and we have the makings of a tumultuous month ahead. And while I don’t want to seem to be piling on here, I must also add that this Solar Eclipse is the longest one in this entire Century. Ya think that someone trying to tell us something?
Eclipses bring changes, both good and bad. Solar eclipses are usually associated with new beginnings, but here at 29° Cancer, it marks the end of something to which one has become emotionally attached. The key here is to understand, intellectually at least, that this “end of something” is a perquisite for a new beginning to take place. The emotional attachment part probably is more difficult to let go of, but hey, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Let go of your Cancer insecurities. As the natural ruler of the fourth house, Cancer relates to the very bottom of things, to the “root of the root” of oneself. If you really want to change something, ya gotta get to the bottom of things, scope it out, scoop out the decay and plant the seeds of something new.
Bernadette Brady puts this eclipse in Saros Series 11 South, about which she says,
“This family of eclipses is associated with the need to make sudden reforms. Old ideas and methods will fail and new systems are required to deal with the events brought about by the eclipse. ..”
I’d say this fits and expands upon the pattern we’re looking at here.
Remember, in a solar eclipse, it’s the light of the Sun which is shut down, meaning that the “will/ego/force” that He represents is “on hold,” even if for just this moment. And while the Sun’s light is blocked, the Moon also does not shine because She has her back to the Sun and so is in no position to reflect the Sun’s light to us. Consequently, the needs/emotions/mentality that the Moon represents also does not shine. In other words, it’s like a “Null” moment, in which the conflict between the archetypal Masculine (Sun) and Feminine (Moon) is quitted. In that moment of truce (Truth) a way may be seen to reconcile these two basic forces.
This is an opportunity to look at things related to the house where the New Moon Solar Eclipse falls. Surely we can expect some fireworks, especially anywhere along the eclipse’s path through India, Tibet, Southern China, Shanghai, and just south of Japan, as well as in our own world of relationships since in our chart for the Southland, this NMSE is in the 7th house which signifies the people who are brought into a close and intimate relationship beyond that of a common acquaintance. In this sense the term “significant other” may be applied as it relates as much to open enemies as to lovers or partners.
Here in the Southland, we can expect to see an end of the unraveling of worn out relationships that have been, more or less, hanging by the proverbial thread. Conversely, it can also see a clearing of the air in an adversarial relationship. At the very least, let’s be willing to review the circumstances of those “care-taking” relationships in life that always seem to require more effort than they are worth. This New Moon Solar Eclipse can allow us to lovingly release the past and throw open the “doors of perception” so that we may breathe the clean, fresh air of the possible. The decks are cleared for your next adventure in Partner Land, with that loving partner that you now have, that new person who fits your partnership bill to a T, or even (and this is really neat) with a new, emergent YOU.
Before we leave this 29th degree stuff, I should mention the rather curious Sabian Symbol that is associated with it: A Daughter of the American Revolution. My dear friend and the world’s most widely respected authority on the Sabians, Lynda Hill, suggests that it is “…an image of someone who stands for and is a product of change…[of]…bringing new ways into the world.” This symbol only serves to reinforce a level of change mentioned above. Perhaps the best suggestion that Lynda has for this degree is a quote taken from “A Course in Miracles: “Seek not to change the world but choose to change your mind about the world.” Embracing that attitude during this month, with its emphasis on a break from business as usual in our relationships seems the wisest course.
Moving on to some other highlights in this chart, we see the Venus in Gemini, Saturn in Virgo exact Square (90°). One of the standard delineations for this aspect is a difficulty in relating to others. Given the 7th house position of the New Moon here, I’d say, forewarned is forearmed. However, both planets are ruled by a fast moving Mercury, urging us to seriously think about just what the important components are in regards to relating to one’s partners. The “other” may be dyn-o-mite in bed, but out of it, do you share the same values? Do you have meaningful, thought provoking conversations? Or laugh at the same things, and each other? Do you deliberately, joyfully and graciously go out of your way to make pleasing that “other” a part of your daily routine? Is your relationship strong enough to weather the stressful demands that are often placed on it? This Venus/Saturn square offers you the challenge to make it work in the real world or, on the other hand, the gumption to take a stand and make a clear declaration of your intentions, needs and dreams.
Finally, there’s that pesky and persistent Aquarian conjunction of Chiron, Jupiter and Neptune, in our Southland’s 2nd house. On the surface it would certainly seem to be an immensely spiritual and idealistic gathering. Yet the succedent second house is not a strong position for it. Its very “woo-woo”ness suggests a great potential for inflated optimism. It challenges our values and puts a strain on our material resources, heightening our perhaps unrealistic expectations and encouraging an inappropriate urge to spend those limited resources on chasing gossamer dreams of wealth and possessions. Investors might better place their money in a mattress this month rather than in any hoped for market recovery.

From Wikipedia:
The solar eclipse that will take place on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 [ed. - in San Diego, Tuesday, July 21, 7:35 p.m.) will be a total eclipse of the Sun with a magnitude of 1.080 that will be visible from a narrow corridor through northern India, eastern Nepal, northern Bangladesh, Bhutan, the northern tip of Myanmar, central China and the Pacific Ocean, including the Ryukyu Islands, Marshall Islands and Kiribati. Totality will be visible in many cities such as Surat, Varanasi, Patna, Thimphu, Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, Hangzhou and Shanghai, as well as over the Three Gorges Dam. A partial eclipse will be seen from the much broader path of the Moon’s penumbra, including most of South East Asia and north-eastern Oceania.
This solar eclipse is the longest total solar eclipse that will occur in the twenty-first century, and will not be surpassed in duration until June 13, 2132. Totality will last for up to 6 minutes and 39 seconds, with the maximum eclipse occurring in the ocean at 02:35:21 UTC about 100 km south of the Bonin Islands, southeast of Japan. The North Iwo Jima island is the landmass with totality time closest to maximum.
Astrologically, eclipses herald turning points when critical issues reach their peak. Find the house in your chart where 29.27 Cancer falls to get an idea of which areas of your life are being “eclipsed”!
A lunar eclipse at 13.43 Aquarius will follow on August 5, 2009, 5:55 pm PDT.

We’ve just posted an article by astrologer, author, and popular speaker Robert Blaschke on the astrology of U.K. singing sensation Susan Boyle:
Direct Station of Venus Exalted in Pisces: Susan Boyle - by Robert Blaschke
For each of us, there is a powerful degree in the zodiac that remains charged, or filled with life-giving power, throughout our earthly existence. This degree is that of our prenatal solar eclipse. Susan Boyle’s prenatal eclipse occurred on February 15, 1961 at 26° Aquarius. Remarkably, now that she has become a worldwide symbol for the hope and faith required to never give up on one’s dream, we see that the upcoming conjunction of Jupiter and Neptune in late May, itself an alignment of hope and transcendence, will fall precisely on Ms. Boyle’s prenatal solar eclipse. When the prenatal solar eclipse is calculated for Susan Boyle’s place of birth, the 20th degree of Pisces is rising, and the Galactic Center degree in 26° Sagittarius is culminating. From Charubel’s The Degrees of the Zodiac Symbolized, (3) we find the all-important rising degree symbol for 20° Pisces to be: An angel blowing a trumpet….
